3 Counties-Mac User Group Beds, Bucks & Herts
(3CsMUG)
Luton

Chris Curtis
07973147231

If you're in Bedfordshire, Herfordshire or Buckinghamshire, the 3 Counties Mac User Group meets once a month in Luton for a mix of presentations, socialising and sharing advice. The presentations vary between useful basics (like getting the most out of iPhoto) and more advanced topics (like masking in Photoshop or using Final Cut Pro). There's an informal feel to our evenings with plenty of coffee and a chance to get help from other members, especially if you're relatively new to macs. Over the past year we've also had several sessions at local Apple stores where the store has opened exclusively for the group and Apple staff have given presentations and training. Our website and regular emails are a good way to keep in touch with what we're doing.

Exeter Mac User Group
(ExaMUG)
ISCA College, Exeter
Social meetings: White Hart Hotel

Graham Bone

Hi, we are the Mac User Group (MUG) for Exeter and the surrounding area.

Our members include techies, artists, teachers, musicians, students, retirees, scientists and designers. We have members who have used macs their whole lives, those that have just made the switch and those who are not even sure what a mac is! We have members who want to learn how to make family photo albums, newsletters and music playlists. We have members who want to learn how to network their mac to their PC and those who want to start programming a universal binary. We have young members and members who are young at heart.

We have regular meetings on the second Tuesday of every odd-numbered month at ISCA College, Exeter. As a specialist media arts college they have a suite of Macbooks and digital projectors we can use at our meetings. The college is a superb, modern venue, it is easy to find with good transport links and free parking. You can find directions on our website, Google Maps or the schools website.

We also have social meetings on the second Tuesday of every even-numbered month at the White Hart Hotel. These provide the opportunity for like minded Apple users to meet up for a chat and a drink in a great setting.

Group Objectives

The group aims to provide:

A friendly forum for Apple users to meet and discuss products, both new and old
Demonstrations of hardware and software products
Assistance to Apple users, new and old
Solutions to Apple based dilemmas
Advice for anyone interested in purchasing Apple products to new Apple users

London Macintosh User Group
(LMUG)
Nr Baker St

Tim Simmons
01277 222 125

Founded in 1986, The London Macintosh User Group continues to attract a wide range of Mac devotees from absolute beginners to experienced professionals. Meetings are held monthly in a central London pub and an active Committee organises a varied programme. Events may include speakers on Mac related topics, "special interest " evenings where we split into smaller discussion groups, or "show and tell" evenings when members demonstrate their favourite software or achievements of which they are particularly proud. The group has its own screen and projector, laptop, PA system and has internet access via its own telephone line and ISP.

At all monthly meetings there is a popular Q & A session, a raffle, and a roundup of the latest news on the Mac scene. After the main business of the evening those wanting more can stay behind for technical discussions in greater depth on any topic in demand.

The events have a strong social element with ample opportunity for members to meet with others over a beer or plate of Thai food served by the pub. Two events, a Christmas party and a Summer garden party are purely social and help to cement the group into something more than a collection of strangers who happen to have an interest in Mac computers.

For those who cannot attend meetings ( and for those who can) there is a monthly newsletter – SoundByte and a website. There is also an online forum – LMUG Talk- where members and non members can receive answers to questions they have submitted.

Mac Cafe
(MacCafe)

Nigel Hamlin
Skype: nige1h

Simply put, Mac Cafe is the best little Mac-oriented online group we know. It's not a huge place, currently having about 200 seats, but we always can find room for more - a big advantage of being virtual! What's more, it's all free, there's no admission charge and there are no prices on any of our menus. It's a very informal place - there's no dress code - and very friendly, so much so in fact that we also devote quite bit of effort to running one of the most successful teams using BOINC software to try and find ET!
We're always happy to have people contribute further resources to that search, preferably from those who have a spare eight-core 3 GHz Mac pro that's otherwise sitting doing nothing, but every contribution helps, no matter how small.
Obviously, being virtual, we have branches everywhere and, in practice, that means not just in the UK, although that's from where most of our clientèle hail. But we do have valued customers as far afield as the US and Australia. Discussion in the Cafe tends to be Mac-related in some way, but it can be very tenuous - or even, dare I say, contrived? As we're so informal, though, there are no restrictions on what our customers can discuss, other than expecting things to be kept nice and polite, of course, but we've never yet had any problems with misbehaviour!
